Diet Coke And Mentos

June 17th, 2009

There are many people who talk about the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment. So what is this experiment exactly? We will discuss in detail the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment in the next paragraph. Diet coke is a sugar free soft drink produced by the Coca Cola Company in the USA. Diet Coke is preferred by millions of people around the world for its low sugar content. Hence it proves to be beneficial for those people suffering from diabetes and obesity related disorders. On the other hand Mentos is another very famous brand available in most countries around the world. Mentos is manufactured by Perfetti Company and the product was first introduced in the Netherlands. Mentos comes under the category of candies that are a little hard from outside and are soft from inside. They are available in a lot of fruit flavors like strawberry, orange, and lemon as well as mint flavor. In the next paragraph we discuss the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment.

There are thousands of people worldwide who have conducted the experiment of Diet Coke and Mentos. In this experiment you put some pieces of Mentos in the Diet Coke Can or bottle and see the whole bottle or can explode. There are people who have posted videos of the whole experiment on the internet for everyone to see. The video can be viewed or downloaded by searching on Google. People are trying to find out why the Diet Coke bottle explodes in the experiment. The reason for the explosion is that the Mentos triggers an instant reaction in the Coke bottle where it dissolves CO2 in a very confined space very quickly. As a result there is a loud explosion.

There are hundreds of people who have heard the experiment on radio or seen the video on television and perform the experiment in the open near their homes. The experiment has also become controversial in terms of it being used as a potential bomb in an airplane. Also both these products are easily available and can be carried on the plane. However it is seen that the explosion is not all that powerful and it cannot harm people provided they maintain a safe distance of at least 5 meters from the bottle. The maximum that one can suffer is getting splashed with Coke in their faces.
